Chat Completions

Spice provides an OpenAI compatible chat completion AI at https://data.spiceai.io/v1/chat/completions. Authorize with the endpoint using a Project API key.

The project requires a configured and deployed model to respond to chat completion requests.

For more information about using chat completions, refer to the OpenAI documentation.

      object with otherobject
      • otherstringRequired

  • frequency_penaltynumber (float) | null

Number between -2.0 and 2.0. Positive values penalize new tokens based on their existing frequency in the text so far, decreasing the model's likelihood to repeat the same line verbatim.

  • function_call"none" | "auto" | object | null

    Deprecated in favor of tool_choice.

Controls which (if any) function is called by the model. none means the model will not call a function and instead generates a message. auto means the model can pick between generating a message or calling a function. Specifying a particular function via {"name": "my_function"} forces the model to call that function.

none is the default when no functions are present. auto is the default if functions are present.

    3 options

    One of

    "none"string

The model does not call a function, and responds to the end-user.

Omitting parameters defines a function with an empty parameter list.

  • logit_biasmap of integer (int32) | null

Modify the likelihood of specified tokens appearing in the completion.

Accepts a json object that maps tokens (specified by their token ID in the tokenizer) to an associated bias value from -100 to 100. Mathematically, the bias is added to the logits generated by the model prior to sampling. The exact effect will vary per model, but values between -1 and 1 should decrease or increase likelihood of selection; values like -100 or 100 should result in a ban or exclusive selection of the relevant token.

  • logprobsboolean | null

Whether to return log probabilities of the output tokens or not. If true, returns the log probabilities of each output token returned in the content of message.

  • max_completion_tokensinteger (int32) | null

    • Minimum: 0
  • max_tokensinteger (int32) | nullDeprecated

      • textstringRequired

    • typestringRequired

      • Value: content
  • presence_penaltynumber (float) | null

  • reasoning_effortstring | null

Constrains effort on reasoning for reasoning models. Currently supported values are minimal, low, medium, and high. Reducing reasoning effort can result in faster responses and fewer tokens used on reasoning in a response. Note: The gpt-5-pro model defaults to (and only supports) high reasoning effort.

    • Allowed values: none, minimal, low, medium, high, xhigh
  • response_formatobject | null

An object specifying the format that the model must output.

Setting to { "type": "json_schema", "json_schema": {...} } enables Structured Outputs which ensures the model will match your supplied JSON schema. Learn more in the Structured Outputs guide.

Setting to { "type": "json_object" } enables the older JSON mode, which ensures the message the model generates is valid JSON. Using json_schema is preferred for models that support it.

    type: textobject

The type of response format being defined: text

    • typestringRequired

      • Value: json_schema
  • safety_identifierstring | null

A stable identifier used to help detect users of your application that may be violating OpenAI's usage policies.

  • seedinteger (int64) | nullDeprecated

    This feature is in Beta.

If specified, our system will make a best effort to sample deterministically, such that repeated requests with the same seed and parameters should return the same result.

Determinism is not guaranteed, and you should refer to the system_fingerprint response parameter to monitor changes in the backend.

  • service_tierstring | null

Specifies the processing type used for serving the request.

    • If set to 'auto', then the request will be processed with the service tier configured in the Project settings. Unless otherwise configured, the Project will use 'default'.
    • If set to 'default', then the request will be processed with the standard pricing and performance for the selected model.
    • If set to 'flex' or 'priority', then the request will be processed with the corresponding service tier.
    • When not set, the default behavior is 'auto'.

When the service_tier parameter is set, the response body will include the service_tier value based on the processing mode actually used to serve the request. This response value may be different from the value set in the parameter.

Options for streaming response. Only set this when you set stream: true.

    2 properties
    • include_obfuscationboolean | null

When true, stream obfuscation will be enabled. Stream obfuscation adds random characters to an obfuscation field on streaming delta events to normalize payload sizes as a mitigation to certain side-channel attacks. These obfuscation fields are included by default, but add a small amount of overhead to the data stream. You can set include_obfuscation to false to optimize for bandwidth if you trust the network links between your application and the OpenAI API.

    • include_usageboolean | null

If set, an additional chunk will be streamed before the data: [DONE] message. The usage field on this chunk shows the token usage statistics for the entire request, and the choices field will always be an empty array.

All other chunks will also include a usage field, but with a null value. NOTE: If the stream is interrupted, you may not receive the final usage chunk which contains the total token usage for the request.

  • temperaturenumber (float) | null

What sampling temperature to use, between 0 and 2. Higher values like 0.8 will make the output more random, while lower values like 0.2 will make it more focused and deterministic.

We generally recommend altering this or top_p but not both.

  • tool_choiceobject | null

Controls which (if any) tool is called by the model. none means the model will not call any tool and instead generates a message. auto means the model can pick between generating a message or calling one or more tools. required means the model must call one or more tools. Specifying a particular tool via {"type": "function", "function": {"name": "my_function"}} forces the model to call that tool. none is the default when no tools are present. auto is the default if tools are present.

Text-to-SQL (NSQL)

POST/v1/nsql

Generate and optionally execute a natural-language text-to-SQL (NSQL) query.

This endpoint generates a SQL query using a natural language query (NSQL) and optionally executes it. The SQL query is generated by the specified model and executed if the Accept header is not set to application/sql. When stream is true, the response is streamed as Server-Sent Events (SSE).

Header parameters

NameTypeRequiredDescription
X-API-KeystringYes

Your project API key. See API keys.

AcceptstringYes

The format of the response, one of 'application/json' (default), 'application/vnd.spiceai.nsql.v1+json', 'application/sql', 'text/csv' or 'text/plain'. 'application/sql' will only return the SQL query generated by the model.

Request body

Required

Request body to generate an NSQL query

application/json

  • datasetsarray of string | null

Names of datasets to sample from when constructing model context; this is a sampling hint and does not restrict which tables queries can target. If omitted, all datasets are used.

  • modelstring | null

The name of the model to use for SQL generation. If omitted, Spice defaults to the only compatible LLM model configured in the Spicepod.

  • prompt_cache_keystring | null

Stable prompt-cache key forwarded to the configured NSQL model for provider-specific cache handling.

  • querystringRequired

The natural language query to be converted into SQL

  • sample_data_enabledboolean

Whether sample data is included in the context for SQL generation. Default: false

  • streamboolean

If true, streams the response instead of waiting for completion

Example request

curl -X POST "https://data.spiceai.io/v1/nsql" \
  -H "X-API-Key: <project-api-key>" \
  -H "Accept: application/json" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
