# Changelog

New updates and improvements to the Spice Cloud Platform

## October 2026

October 31, 2026

### Highlights

- **Management MCP Server**: The Management API now has an MCP server at `https://api.spice.ai/mcp`. Each public Management API operation is one MCP tool. Project **Settings > Endpoints** shows the URL.
- **User OAuth for Coding Agents**: You can create a user OAuth client in **Settings > User OAuth**. The client acts as you, and you select the org when you give consent. MCP clients such as Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor can register with only the server URL.
- **Default Monitors**: Spice.ai now creates eight monitors for each new project on Spice-managed compute and for each fork. They watch instance health, dataset status, HTTP 5xx responses, Flight SQL failures, SQL query failures, SQL p99 latency, CPU, and memory. Set `default_alerts: false` on `POST /v1/projects` to skip them.
- **[Instance Health Monitor](https://spice.ai/docs/cloud/portal/monitoring-and-request-logs)**: The new Instance health monitor sends an alert when a project instance reports a failed state, a runtime error, or an eviction. Spice.ai combines related alerts that arrive within 5 seconds of each other into one notification. Alert emails now start with the state, the value, and the action.
- **Secrets in spicepod.yaml**: The portal refuses a save that adds a plain-text password, token, or API key to spicepod.yaml. **Move to secrets** stores each value as a project secret or an org secret. The project secrets page lists each `${secrets:NAME}` reference, and you can add a secret that is missing.
- **Spice 2.0 Upgrade**: **Upgrade to Spice 2.0** now also updates spicepod.yaml to the Spice 2.0 format. For a project connected to GitHub, Spice.ai prepares the spicepod.yaml changes for the repository. If Spice 2.0 cannot load the spicepod, the banner lists the errors to correct first.
- **[GitHub Repositories](https://spice.ai/docs/cloud/portal/apps/connect-github)**: A connected GitHub repository can now have a name that is different from the project name. The new **Root directory** setting points to the directory that contains spicepod.yaml.
- **Playground Effort and Message Edits**: You can set the reasoning effort in AI Chat, Text-to-SQL, and Decisions. The control starts at the model default and shows only the levels that the model accepts. You can edit a sent chat message, and the model answers again.
- **SFTP and SMB Connections**: Org admins can now add SFTP and SMB connections and use them in the projects of the org.
- **Passkey Sign-In**: You can add a passkey in **Settings > Account settings > Security**, and then sign in with it. Your account pages are now at `/settings`, and links to `/account` go to them.
- **[Force Delete an Instance](https://spice.ai/docs/cloud/portal/app-spicepod/deployments)**: You can now force delete a Spicepod instance that does not stop or start. Spice.ai then starts a new replica in its place. Members with any role except Viewer can do this.
- **Management API Changes**: `GET` and `POST /v1/orgs/{orgId}/secrets` manage org secrets, and `PUT /v1/projects/{projectId}/org-secrets/{secretName}` links one to a project. `PUT /v1/projects/{projectId}/repository` connects a project to a GitHub repository. `GET /v1/projects/{projectId}/instances/{instanceName}/logs` returns the logs of an instance.
- **Deploy a Branch or Commit**: For a project connected to GitHub, `POST /v1/projects/{projectId}/deployments` accepts `branch` and `commit_sha`. The deployment uses spicepod.yaml from that revision, and the API refuses a revision that the project cannot read.
- **Observability Polish**: The Issues page now filters issues by level and by category. The cache hits and misses chart shows the share of each as a 100% stack.
- **Model Catalog Refresh**: The catalog adds `claude-sonnet-5-5`, the new Anthropic default, and `claude-haiku-5-5`. It also adds `gpt-6.1-sol`, `gpt-6.1-terra`, `gemini-4-argon`, `grok-imagine-video-1.5-lite`, and `kimi-k3.1-pro`, the new Moonshot default. OpenAI models get a Responses API option, and Spice.ai marks retired OpenAI and Google models.

### Runtime

**Stable channel**

Spice runtime [v2.4.0](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.4.0) (Oct 27, 2026), a minor release:

- **Spice Cayenne by Default**: Datasets without `acceleration.engine` now use Cayenne, not Arrow. A Cayenne dataset with a `primary_key` keeps one row for each key in every refresh mode.
- **DataFusion v55**: The query engine moves to DataFusion v55 and Arrow v59.3. Ballista v55, Vortex v0.86, and Iceberg v0.11 are also in this release.
- **AI Decisions**: Five SQL decision functions, for example `ai_classify()` and `ai_probability()`, and the OpenAI-compatible `POST /v1/decisions` API ask a model for a decision.
- **S3 Event-Driven Refresh**: With `refresh_mode: changes`, an accelerated S3 dataset loads new objects when SQS sends S3 event notifications.
- **Lower Latency During Refreshes**: Full and append refreshes now write on their own threads. In a Cayenne test, P99 query latency at a refresh commit decreased from up to 690 ms to 44 to 50 ms.
- v2.4.0 has breaking changes, for example for SQL results-cache expiry and `on_conflict` on Cayenne. Read the [release notes](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.4.0#breaking-changes) before you upgrade.

**Preview channel**

Spice runtime [v2.4.1](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.4.1) (Oct 29, 2026):

- MySQL datasets and catalogs replace each pooled connection after `mysql_connection_max_lifetime`, `5m` by default. The pool then uses all servers behind a load-balanced hostname, such as an Aurora reader endpoint.
- With `mysql_connection_string`, the `mysql_pool_min` and `mysql_pool_max` settings now apply.
- The runtime logs a warning when a `full` or `append` refresh takes more than 3 times as long as the median of recent refreshes.

Spice runtime [v2.4.0-rc.3](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.4.0-rc.3) (Oct 22, 2026):

- On Unix, the runtime raises its soft open file limit to the hard limit at startup.
- An append refresh of an Iceberg table now follows the snapshots of the table.

### SDKs

- **[spice-rs 5.0.0](https://github.com/spiceai/spice-rs/releases/tag/v5.0.0)**: spice-rs moves to Arrow 59 and binds `chrono` and `std::time` values as query parameters. Parameterized queries now work with API keys.
- **[gospice 9.1.0](https://github.com/spiceai/gospice/releases/tag/v9.1.0)**: gospice binds `time.Time`, `time.Duration`, pointers, and `sql.Null*` values as query parameters. It accepts any API key that is not empty.
- **[spice.js 3.3.0](https://github.com/spiceai/spice.js/releases/tag/v3.3.0)**: spice.js can cancel a query with an `AbortSignal` and adds `runtimeStatus()` and `refreshDataset()`.
- **[spice-dotnet 0.5.0](https://github.com/spiceai/spice-dotnet/releases/tag/v0.5.0)**: spice-dotnet adds `GetRuntimeStatusAsync()` and accepts a `grpc://` Flight endpoint.
- **[spicepy 4.0.1](https://github.com/spiceai/spicepy/releases/tag/v4.0.1)**: spicepy binds numpy and pandas scalars as query parameters. HTTP errors now include the message from the runtime.
- **[spice-java 0.8.1](https://github.com/spiceai/spice-java/releases/tag/v0.8.1)**: spice-java accepts any API key that is not empty. It also declares the Netty modules that TLS connections to Spice Cloud need.

**Bug Fixes**

- Instance details now show the errors that keep an instance from the ready state.
- The page of a new project now updates until its first deployment is ready.
- A queued deployment now shows **Ready** when an instance already serves it.
- A resume now deploys the head of the production branch and turns on the monitors that the pause turned off.
- A paused project stays paused after a rename or a transfer.
- A deploy now follows a renamed production branch, and a deploy from the GitHub Action uses the production branch.
- The portal now shows the correct current version for a project on a nightly build, and the next version after a Spice 2.0 upgrade.
- Spice.ai now reads YAML merge keys in spicepod.yaml.
- The portal shows a reconnect prompt when the GitHub installation of an org no longer exists.
- An FTP dataset that you add in the portal now has the correct `from` value.
- Failed tasks of a project on Spice-managed compute now show under the **Failed** filter in Observability.
- Notifications now show above an open dialog.
- The first load of a dataset now shows as **Loading**.
- Alert email charts now show the firing window and the gaps in the data.
- Instance CPU monitors keep their state after a redeployment.
- The OAuth server now accepts scopes that contain a hyphen, for example `audit-log:read`.
- `PUT /v1/projects/{projectId}` now validates its values and keeps the system tags of the project.
- The Management API OpenAPI document now uses the OpenAPI 3.1 form for nullable fields.
- A failed revoke of a personal access token now shows an error.
- The command menu shows ⌘K on macOS and Ctrl K on other systems.
- The Iceberg catalog API now returns `404` when a parent namespace does not exist. A `HEAD` request on an accelerated table now finds the table.

## September 2026

September 30, 2026

### Highlights

- **Project Monitors**: Project monitors are now available on every project that Spice.ai hosts. You can monitor SQL query failures, SQL p99 latency, HTTP 5xx errors, errors from Arrow Flight SQL, instance memory, and instance CPU. The memory and CPU monitors measure each instance against its configured limit.
- **Slack Integration**: You can connect a Slack workspace to an org in **Settings > Integrations**. Project monitors and cluster monitors can then send alerts to a Slack channel. When the alert condition clears, Spice.ai marks the original message as resolved and adds a reply in its thread.
- **Alert Destinations**: One alert can now notify email, Slack, and an HTTPS webhook together. Org admins can save a list of email recipients that members can add to an alert. You can send a test alert from the page of a monitor.
- **SQL Query Time Limits**: Spice.ai now applies the [query time limit of your plan](https://spice.ai/docs/cloud/api/management) to SQL queries after the next deployment of a project. An Enterprise query can run for up to 30 minutes. The playground and Task History show when a query times out, and you can filter Task History for these queries.
- **Fork a Project**: You can now fork a project into a new project, in the same location or in a different region or dedicated cluster. A fork copies the spicepod, connections, secrets, update channel, and tags, and it links back to the source project. The Management API adds `POST /v1/projects/{projectId}/forks`.
- **MySQL Real-Time Replicas**: Real-time onboarding and the Real-time Replica template now accept MySQL as a source, with binlog replication. The portal warns you when GTID is not on. Without GTID, replication can fail to resume after a failover of the source.
- **[Deployment Failure Reasons](https://spice.ai/docs/cloud/portal/app-spicepod/deployments)**: A deployment that cannot start now shows **Failed to start** with the reason, for example not enough CPU, memory, or storage. The Management API returns the reason in `error_code`. The new `GET /v1/projects/{projectId}/deployments/{deploymentId}` endpoint returns one deployment.
- **Cluster Monitors**: Dedicated clusters now have monitors for cluster CPU, cluster memory, and cluster availability. Each monitor compares the total use with the total capacity of the cluster. Org members and viewers can now see the resources and the monitoring of a cluster.
- **Model Catalog Refresh**: The catalog adds `claude-opus-5-5`, `claude-fable-5-1`, `gpt-6-sol`, `gpt-6-luna`, and `gpt-6-astra`. `grok-4.7` is the new default for xAI. Spice.ai marks the retired models from OpenAI, xAI, and Groq, and you can now save a Moonshot connection.
- **Connections**: Real-time onboarding now saves the source database as an org connection that other projects can use. A connection also has a display name that can contain any characters. The portal generates the identifier for spicepod references.
- **Org Administration**: Org admins can now [regenerate the secret of an OAuth client](https://spice.ai/docs/cloud/portal/oauth-clients). The audit log has a Resource column that names the object of each event. The Usage page shows persistent storage in GB-hours.
- **Management API Changes**: The Management API adds `PATCH /v1/projects/{projectId}/monitors/{alertId}` and the `/v1/clusters/{clusterId}/monitors` endpoints. For a project connected to GitHub, `PUT /v1/projects/{projectId}` returns `409` with code `github_connected` if the request changes the spicepod. Change `spicepod.yaml` in the repository instead.
- **Playground Polish**: Search results show which column matched, and you can select the column to show. In Text-to-SQL, the Sample data switch moves to Advanced options, with a description of the rows that it sends to the model.

### Runtime

**Stable channel**

Spice runtime [v2.3.2](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.3.2) (Sep 22, 2026):

- Cayenne now builds the `indexes` that a dataset declares, in `mode: file` and in `mode: memory`. A lookup on all columns of an index reads only the matching rows.
- The runtime checks the SQL results cache before it plans a query. In the release benchmarks, the time for a small cache hit decreased by 44% to 52%.
- A full refresh now writes each file with a distinct range of the data, so a filtered query reads fewer files.
- `cayenne_cluster_by` replaces `cayenne_datalake_clustering_columns` and groups related rows in all storage tiers. Rename the parameter before you upgrade.
- Cayenne datasets with different `cayenne_file_path` values must now share one `cayenne_metadata_dir`. Set it on each dataset before you upgrade.

Spice runtime [v2.3.1](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.3.1) (Sep 15, 2026):

- In the release benchmarks, Vortex scans with a selective filter read 45% to 58% fewer bytes. Vortex also evaluates a large constant `IN` list in one pass.
- Parameterized queries now use one cached logical plan for all parameter values. The SQL results cache keeps a separate result for each set of values.
- `DELETE`, `UPDATE`, and `INSERT` now change the rows of a Cayenne acceleration in the default `mode: memory`.
- Cayenne applies `sort_columns` when a full refresh replaces a table.
- Projects that move to v2.3.1 from v2.1.x also get the changes in v2.2.0, v2.2.1, and v2.3.0. Read the [v2.3.0 breaking changes](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.3.0#breaking-changes) before you deploy.

**Preview channel**

Spice runtime [v2.3.0](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.3.0) (Sep 10, 2026) is a minor release:

- **BigQuery Federation**: BigQuery runs more query shapes as one remote job, for example recursive CTEs, correlated subqueries, and aggregate window functions. When a client cancels a query, the BigQuery job stops.
- **Caching Accelerator Limits**: The new `caching_max_size` and `caching_max_items` settings limit the size and the row count of a `refresh_mode: caching` acceleration.
- **SQL Results Cache**: When you set `stale_while_revalidate_ttl`, the runtime serves the previous result during a refresh and revalidates it in the background.
- **GitHub Data Connector**: The connector adds eight tables, for example `reviews`, `review_threads`, and `releases`, and 17 columns on `pulls`.
- **Google Models on Vertex AI**: A `from: google` model now authenticates with a GCP service account on Vertex AI. The runtime no longer accepts `google_api_key`.
- v2.3.0 has breaking changes. Read the [release notes](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.3.0) before you upgrade.

Spice runtime [v2.2.1](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.2.1) (Sep 2, 2026):

- Cayenne now reclaims the storage that upserts and compaction leave behind. Disk and metastore use stay bounded on tables with frequent refreshes or CDC upserts.
- Cayenne applies `retention_sql` on datasets with `refresh_mode: full` or `refresh_mode: changes`. A `retention_sql` predicate can now call `now()`.
- The bundled DuckDB moves from v1.5.5 to v1.4.4, so the memory of DuckDB upsert refreshes stays steady. SQL syntax that DuckDB added in v1.5 is not available.
- The HTTP data connector keeps at most 64 MiB of responses in its cache for each dataset by default. Set `response_cache_max_size_bytes` to change the limit.
- Vector search with HuggingFace sentence-transformer models returns more relevant results. On MTEB SciFact with `all-MiniLM-L6-v2`, nDCG\@10 increases from 0.018 to 0.640.

**Bug Fixes**

- A dataset in the Refreshing state now counts as ready. Instance details show it as **Ready · Refreshing**.
- Monitoring charts now show the most recent data.
- Cluster monitoring charts and the charts for the Arrow Flight API show data at the correct resolution. The Flight charts add views for the gRPC status, the error rate, and the latency.
- A deployment that the platform refuses now shows as failed. Deployment history marks a deployment Ready only when an instance served it.
- A deployment no longer stays in progress after its instances become ready or fail. A newer deployment replaces the older deployments that still wait.
- A resume that fails now leaves the project paused, so you can try the resume again.
- When you pause a project, Spice.ai now disables its monitors. When you delete a project or an account, Spice.ai removes its monitors.
- Instance CPU and memory monitors no longer send a false no-data warning after a deployment replaces the instances.
- A dataset refresh request now returns an error if a project instance does not accept the refresh.
- The portal and the Management API now reject a spicepod that adds a retired component source when you save it, not when you deploy it.
- `PUT /v1/projects/{projectId}` returns `404` or `409`, not `500`, if someone deletes the project or changes its state during the update. `POST /v1/projects` returns `409` if someone deletes the project while Spice.ai configures it.
- A deployment request with an `image_tag` that the update channel does not publish now returns `400`. `PUT /v1/projects/{projectId}` accepts `image_tag: null` together with `update_channel`.
- The OpenAPI spec for deployments now matches the response of the API.
- Create-project pages show **Create Spice Project**. **Test connection** shows only for connectors that can test a connection.
- Password managers no longer prompt you to fill or save connector credentials or alert names.
- The spicepod editor keeps the upgrade hint for a saved model after the model retires.
- Monitor pages keep your unsaved edits, show the full alert name and the current threshold, and keep chart labels readable.

## August 2026

August 31, 2026

### Highlights

- **[Cloud Connect](https://spiceai.org/docs/deployment/cloud/cloud-connect) (Private Preview)**: You can attach a self-hosted Spice runtime to Spice Cloud. Run `spice cloud link` to enroll an instance. The portal then monitors it, deploys to it, and runs playground SQL against it. Your data stays on your own host.
- **Bring Your Own Cloud (Private Preview)**: Spice.ai deploys a project into your own AWS account, in any commercial AWS region. The portal runs playground SQL, monitoring, and logs against that cluster. This needs an Enterprise plan.
- **Projects**: Spice.ai renames apps to projects across the portal and the management API. The `/v1/projects` routes are canonical. Every `/v1/apps` route continues to work permanently, so your CLI, Terraform, and SDK integrations do not change.
- **Project Monitors (Private Preview)**: Observability adds monitors for queries, models, HTTP, memory, and dataset status. A monitor sends email to project members, or it posts to an HTTPS URL. The email names the condition, the observed value, and recent history, with a chart.
- **Data Reactions (Private Preview)**: A When/Then editor builds a reaction that runs when a task fails, a query is too slow, or a row matches. Reactions use managed [Drasi](https://drasi.io/).
- **Debezium CDC Without Kafka**: A project accepts Debezium change events at `POST /v1/datasets/{name}/cdc`, in JSON or Avro. You do not need a Kafka bus. This needs runtime v2.2.0, on the Preview channel.
- **Dedicated Cluster Egress IPs**: Settings > Runtime shows the egress IPs a dedicated cluster connects out from. You can add them to the allow-list of a database, an API, or a firewall. This needs an Enterprise plan.
- **Org Discovery**: The new `GET /v1/orgs` endpoint lists the orgs a management credential can reach.
- **Model Catalog Refresh**: The catalog adds `grok-4.6` and `gemini-3.7-flash`, and makes each one the default for its provider. Spice.ai marks the retired OpenAI, Google, and Bedrock models.
- **Faster Portal**: Portal routes load less JavaScript, so pages open faster. The playground restores your chat, search, and text-to-SQL when you return to it.

### Runtime

**Stable channel**

Spice runtime [v2.1.5](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.1.5) (Aug 12, 2026):

- The runtime clears cached results reliably after a refresh, a write, a retention change, or an update to a dependent local dataset.
- Cayenne counts the memory it needs to prepare query results. Accelerated tables share the available memory, so large and concurrent workloads stay within the configured limit.
- A refresh or a write on a dataset with many cached results no longer holds up health checks.
- Cache dashboards now report the total space, the space in use, stored results, requests, and reuse on every refresh.

Spice runtime [v2.1.4](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.1.4) (Aug 5, 2026):

- A dataset with a UTC timestamp column, such as an Iceberg `timestamptz` column, failed to load when accelerated with DuckDB. These datasets now load and become ready.
- Retention policies now apply cleanly on DuckDB-accelerated datasets. A policy that combines a time window with a condition also applies.
- The runtime crashed in rare cases when a client cancelled a query. This is corrected.

Spice runtime [v2.1.3](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.1.3) (Aug 4, 2026):

- The new `runtime.cpu.cores` setting sets the number of cores the runtime targets. Thread pools, query partitioning, and accelerator concurrency all derive from it.
- Cayenne deployments keep more memory available to queries. The runtime reserves the compaction pool only for accelerations that can compact into it.
- Cayenne accelerates an Iceberg dataset that has a `timestamptz` column. The runtime now reads a fixed-offset time zone.
- A federated `LEFT JOIN` with a `WHERE` filter on the left table returned every row. Filters now stay on the side of the join they came from.

**Preview channel**

Spice runtime [v2.2.0](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.2.0) (Aug 25, 2026) is a minor release:

- **Cloud Connect**: A self-hosted runtime links to Spice Cloud for management and observability. Run `spice cloud link` to enroll a standalone runtime.
- **MySQL CDC**: The MySQL data connector reads `refresh_mode: changes`. The runtime applies binlog inserts, updates, and deletes as they commit. A GTID position survives a failover to a new primary.
- **PostgreSQL Catalog CDC (Alpha)**: A PostgreSQL catalog accepts `refresh_mode: changes`. One configuration replicates every table that the `include` patterns match, with no per-table setup.
- **Debezium CDC Without Kafka**: Any Debezium source plugin can stream change events to `POST /v1/datasets/{name}/cdc`, in JSON or Avro. Spice.ai keeps the existing Kafka path.
- **Faster Search**: Vector and full-text indexes add a warm in-memory tier by default. `cosine_distance` uses SIMD instructions, and full-text search applies stemming and pushes SQL filters into the index.
- **Operations**: The new `runtime.query.timeout` setting bounds every query. Each log record from a query carries the query's trace ID, so you can filter the logs by one ID.

### SDKs

- **[spicepy 4.0.0](https://github.com/spiceai/spicepy/releases/tag/v4.0.0)**: spicepy adds a lazy DataFrame API and an expression DSL, asynchronous queries, search, natural language to SQL, and mTLS. `query()` now submits a query asynchronously. Use `sql()` for the previous synchronous behavior.
- **[spice-rs 4.0.0](https://github.com/spiceai/spice-rs/releases/tag/v4.0.0)**: spice-rs adds asynchronous query jobs, dataset refresh, mTLS, search, and natural language to SQL. `Client::query()` now submits a query asynchronously. Use `Client::sql()` for the previous synchronous behavior.
- **[gospice 9.0.0](https://github.com/spiceai/gospice/releases/tag/v9.0.0)**: gospice adds asynchronous queries, mTLS, search, and per-component runtime status, and it upgrades Arrow to match DataFusion 54. `Query` now submits a query asynchronously. Use `Sql` for the previous synchronous behavior.
- **[spice.js 3.2.0](https://github.com/spiceai/spice.js/releases/tag/v3.2.0)**: spice.js adds asynchronous queries, mTLS, and `nsqlGenerateSql`. `query()` now submits a query asynchronously, and `sql()` keeps the previous synchronous behavior. A query falls back to HTTP when the Flight endpoint is not available.
- **[spice-java 0.8.0](https://github.com/spiceai/spice-java/releases/tag/v0.8.0)**: spice-java adds `search()`, `nsql()`, and active-query management. `query()` now submits a query asynchronously. Use `sql()` for the previous synchronous behavior.
- **[spice-dotnet 0.4.0](https://github.com/spiceai/spice-dotnet/releases/tag/v0.4.0)**: spice-dotnet adds mTLS client certificates, health and readiness checks, `SearchAsync`, and `NsqlAsync`. `QueryAsync` now submits a query asynchronously. Use `SqlAsync` for the previous synchronous behavior.

**Bug Fixes**

- Connection probes for PostgreSQL and MySQL now verify TLS and trust the certificate authorities of Amazon RDS. You can retry a probe that failed.
- The playground waits for a project to report ready before you query it.
- The Issues list reports a failed scan instead of a load that never ends. The portal hides issues from a terminated instance, and you can dismiss an issue.
- Request Logs now says why it is empty. It no longer claims that there are no logs.
- Monitoring shows CPU in millicores when a project sets no CPU limit. Quantile charts stay readable when histogram buckets are empty.
- The acceleration refresh chart shows the maximum refresh time.
- A project card no longer shows Ready next to a warning.
- Spice.ai answers `409` for a duplicate project name, and the project list refreshes after a create that failed.
- A spicepod save that failed after publication is now unpublished, so the portal restores the manifest the database records.
- Inner sidebars no longer cover the portal banners. A link that opens a new tab announces itself, and three inputs get back a visible focus indicator.

## July 2026

July 31, 2026

### Highlights

- **Real-Time Analytics Onboarding**: A guided flow builds a change-data-capture app from PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or DynamoDB, with region selection, connection probes, and a guided sample to explore.
- **App Templates**: Create App now opens with a template gallery, including Real-time Replica, AI Data Warehouse, Datalake Accelerator, and Distributed Query, alongside Start from scratch.
- **Org Connections**: Reusable org-level connections are generally available; credentials are stored as secrets and injected at deploy, connections can be linked to app datasets and models, and members can manage them.
- **Spice Rack Package Registry**: [spicerack.org](https://spicerack.org/) is rebuilt as a package registry with package and publisher pages, search, and a public JSON API; a spicepod package is generated after each successful deploy.
- **AI Coding Agents over MCP**: Apps can be connected to Claude, Codex, and Grok over MCP, with control-plane and data-plane MCP endpoints listed under Settings > Endpoints.
- **Nightly Update Channel**: Nightly is now self-service alongside Stable and Preview, with documentation links that match the runtime version an app is running and a v2 manifest upgrade path.
- **App Navigation and Configuration**: App navigation moves to two tiers, from 11 top-level tabs to 6 (Home, Playground, Build, Observability, Deployments, and Settings). Views and Workers are now configurable from the portal, with the code editor as the advanced surface.
- **Observability**: Deployed runtime errors surface on app pages with a dedicated Issues page and per-issue AI help; app monitoring charts render regardless of readiness with deploy and ready markers; and cluster monitoring splits into Overview and Usage pages with configurable time ranges.
- **Playground Improvements**: Rebuilt schema- and context-aware SQL autocomplete, a new NSQL Context page under Playground APIs, and native search in the `Cmd+K` command menu.
- **Model Catalog Refresh**: Added `claude-opus-5`, the Moonshot (Kimi) provider, `grok-imagine-video-1.5`, and the current OpenAI realtime and audio families, with retiring models marked.
- **Org Access and Limits**: Members can manage connections, secrets, and app secret links; orgs support multiple Owners; viewers are read-only across app-scoped writes; and the per-org app-count limit has been removed.

### Runtime

**Stable channel**

Spice runtime [v2.1.0](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.1.0) (Jul 9, 2026) is a minor release:

- **High-Throughput Cayenne CDC**: An in-memory CDC tier, a dedicated compaction runtime, and write-path optimizations cut replication lag on high-volume change-data-capture workloads.
- **PostgreSQL Replication at Scale**: Multiple `refresh_mode: changes` datasets on a connection can share one `pg_replication_slot`, with unchanged-TOAST recovery and transient walsender contention retried across rolling deploys.
- **Distributed Query**: Ballista distributes Iceberg catalog table scans across executors, broadcasts small dimension tables for distributed joins, and shares scheduler job state so the scheduler can fail over without losing in-flight work.
- **DataFusion v54**: The engine upgrades to DataFusion v54 (folding in v53), Arrow v58.3, and Vortex v0.74, bringing faster joins, scans, and query planning.
- **Adaptive Self-Tuning (Experimental)**: Opt-in `cayenne_tuning` derives Cayenne configuration from detected hardware and schema, or runs a closed-loop controller that adapts to live workload against operator SLOs.
- Added a `GET /v1/nsql/context` endpoint that returns the dialect, dataset schemas, and functions injected into `/v1/nsql` requests, native GLM model support with distributed inference, Kafka mutual TLS, and `on_schema_change` widening-only and `drop_and_recreate` policies.

Spice runtime [v2.1.2](https://spiceai.org/releases/v2.1.2) (Jul 29, 2026):

## September 2023

September 30, 2023

In the September release, Crypto/Token Prices data has been significantly expanded and improved upon.

Historical and latest prices are available via REST API and SQL Query.

The number of token pairs supported by the REST API has greatly increased. In addition, if a pair does not have swap data, the platform will attempt to calculate a synthetic price for the pair, routed via swaps across different exchanges. For example, if a price for the pair BAO-AUD does not exist, but the pairs BAO-USDT and USDT-AUD do, then the API will calculate the routed price across the two swaps to determine a synthetic price, which will be returned in the payload as the `spiceai` price. The API will use data cross both centralized and decentralized exchanges. This enables pricing data where it was not possible before.

Additional tables have been added for token prices and assets.

- prices.assets list all assets tracked and available via SQL Query. 8,856 assets are currently available.
- prices.all\_pairs list all the token pairs with prices available via SQL Query. 3,342 pairs are currently available.

In addition to the existing prices.\[tokenA-tokenB] a table of prices for each token pair.

Note: In both cases, the list is a subset of what is available via the REST API.

**New In this Release**

1. \[SQL Query] Added `prices.assets` table.
2. \[SQL Query] Added `prices.all_pairs` table.
3. \[Prices API] Added swap routed token pricing.
4. \[Prices API] Enhanced coverage of token pairs.
5. \[Portal] Bugfixes and minor improvements to the UI.

## April 2023

April 30, 2023

This month we added new datasets including Chainlink prices data feeds, Aave v2 contract data, Ethereum Shanghai/Capella beacon and withdrawals data, and we now fully index the Goerli testnet. We also released the Goerli Beacon and Ethereum Beacon APIs.\
\
**Chainlink Data Feeds:** You can now leverage oracles for various data feed on the Chainlink network by querying prices specific tables including `eth.chainlink.prices` and `eth.chainlink.recent_prices`.

This includes accessing the latest, minute-precision data on `transaction_hash`, `oracle_address`, `block_timestamp`, price of the asset in WEI, `asset_address` and more. The columns and their schema available for each table can be viewed with the describe \<table> command:

```sql
/* Show the columns available */
DESCRIBE eth.chainlink.prices;
```

Data for for [Curve](https://classic.curve.fi/whitepaper), [Balancer](https://balancer.fi/), [Aave](https://aave.com/), [Yearn](https://yearn.finance/), [DAI](https://makerdao.com/en/), [Tether USD](https://tether.to/en/about-us/) and 30 other top assets is available. See the full list of supported data feeds here.

**Aave V2 Dataset:** In addition to the Aave token prices data feed on the Chainlink network, we have released indexed Aave V2 data for loans, collaterals and prices. You can query for the latest updates to Aave loans and collateral by querying `eth.aave_v2.loan_updates` and `eth.aave_v2.collateral_updates`.

![A query in the SQL Query explorer reads block\_timestamp, asset\_address, user\_address, block\_number, transaction\_hash, and debt\_wei from eth.aave\_v2.loans. The Results pane shows 100 rows in 0.8 seconds.](https://spice.ai/website-assets/docs/screen-shot-2023-05-09-at-9-49-27-am.png)

**Ethereum Shanghai/Capella Upgrade and Withdrawals Datasets:** The [Ethereum Shanghai/Capella upgrade](https://blog.ethereum.org/2023/03/28/shapella-mainnet-announcement) is now full supported after its completion on April 12, 2023, 10:27:35pm UTC at epoch 194048.

The completion of Ethereum's Shanghai hard fork, also known as "Shapella," has authorized the withdrawal of funds for individuals who have "staked" their ETH to validate and secure blockchain transactions.

We also released the `eth.withdrawals` dataset to capture new withdrawals. For example, you can now query to get ETH withdrawn:

```sql
with eth_withdrawn as (
  select eth.withdrawals.block_number, SUM(amount) as amount_gwei
  from eth.withdrawals
  group by eth.withdrawals.block_number
  order by block_number asc)
select AVG(amount_gwei / 1e9) as amount_eth
from eth_withdrawn
```

![The SQL Query explorer runs the eth\_withdrawn query from the code block above. The Results pane shows one row in 0.6 seconds, with an amount\_eth value of about 12.64.](https://spice.ai/website-assets/docs/screen-shot-2023-05-10-at-10-20-00-pm.png)

Get ETH withdrawn after the Ethereum Shanghai upgrade, sample output

Explore detailed sample SQL queries for DEX, Cross-Chain, Ethereum, Beacon, and Bitcoin in the Spice Docs.\

**Goerli Testnet:** Full support for the Goerli testnet has been added, including hosted beacon and execution nodes, and fully indexed datasets, helping developers test their applications before mainnet launch.

Available with realtime and historical data on [Spice.xyz](https://spice.xyz/), this includes Goerli base type tables, Goerli token specific tables, and Goerli Beacon Chain specific tables. You can start by querying `goerli.traces`, `goerli.blocks` or a number of sample beacon queries.

For example, you can query from `goerli.beacon.validators` to retrieve recently updated validators, with their balance and status:

![A query in the SQL Query explorer orders goerli.beacon.validators by updated\_at, newest first, with LIMIT 10. The Results pane shows 10 rows in 1.8 seconds, with the columns validator\_index, balance\_eth, status, and updated\_at\_time. The five visible rows have balances from 32 to about 34.2 ETH and the status ACTIVE\_ONGOING.](https://spice.ai/website-assets/docs/screen-shot-2023-05-09-at-8-33-15-pm.png)

Recently updated validators, with their balance and status by querying from `goerli.beacon.validators`, sample output

**Goerli Beacon API:** You can easily retrieve requests like "get validator balances from state" using the **`https://data.spiceai.io/goerli/beacon`** API, which is compatible with the read-only GET requests from the [Beacon Node API specification](https://ethereum.github.io/beacon-APIs/).

All Goerli testnet data APIs are available at **/goerli/v0.1** including the following:

- JSON RPC Methods
- Beacon HTTP API
- Blocks
- Contracts
- Gas Fees

**Ethereum Beacon API:** The Ethereum API is now updated to support Beacon requests via the **`https://data.spiceai.io/eth/beacon`** API. This is compatible with the read-only GET requests from the [Beacon Node API specification](https://ethereum.github.io/beacon-APIs/).

See the full list of Beacon API requests here.

Within Logs, you can select to retrieve API requests from the past 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, and up to the past 3 days.

![On the Logs tab of the API Requests page, the Period menu shows 3 Days. A table titled 'API Request Logs' lists each request's time, path, status code, and duration in milliseconds. Paths include /v0.1/sql, /eth/v0.1/gasfees, and several /v0.1/sampler endpoints. Every visible request has status code 200.](https://spice.ai/website-assets/docs/image-11.png)

**Ethereum Beacon Chain Dataset (Preview):** The Ethereum beacon chain is the central coordination and consensus layer for the Ethereum 2.0 upgrade, which aims to improve scalability, security, and sustainability. Now you can query and access beacon chain dataset with `eth.beacon`, `eth.beacon.validators`, `eth.beacon.withdrawals` and more.

You can also reference the full query list via Ethereum Beacon tables or by directly querying the following in the application:

```sql
SHOW TABLES IN eth.beacon
```

Example SQL queries include slots, attestations, validators, deposits, voluntary exits, attester slashings and more, all retrievable within a few seconds.

Sample Queries

1. ENS Domain Names that map to a validator\

   ![A query in the SQL Query explorer joins eth.beacon.bls\_to\_execution\_changes, eth.beacon.validators, and ens.domains. It returns 100 rows in 43.1 seconds, with the highest balance first. The first five rows share one address with the ENS names thinking.eth and vtalik.eth. These validators have the status ACTIVE\_ONGOING and balances of about 36.4 to 36.7 ETH.](https://spice.ai/website-assets/docs/screen-shot-2023-04-24-at-10-59-20-pm-1.png)

2. Number of Weekly Attester Slashings\

   ![A query in the SQL Query explorer counts the attester slashings in eth.beacon.attester\_slashings for each week, newest week first. It returns 52 rows in 1.5 seconds. The week of April 10, 2023, has 11 attester slashings. The next four rows show 1 slashing each.](https://spice.ai/website-assets/docs/image-13.png)

3. Top 10 most frequent block proposers\

   ![A query in the SQL Query explorer counts the proposed blocks for each proposer\_index in eth.beacon.slots, where skipped is false. It returns the top 10 proposers in 1.2 seconds. Proposers 4488 and 11027 lead with 59 blocks each. Proposer 13150 is next with 58 blocks.](https://spice.ai/website-assets/docs/image-14.png)

By leveraging beacon chain capabilities, developers can create scalable decentralized applications that can handle a large volume of transactions, while also participating in network governance and incentivization through its Proof of Stake consensus mechanism. You can learn more about the chain [here](https://www.alchemy.com/overviews/what-is-the-ethereum-beacon-chain).

## February 2023

February 28, 2023

Spice released the NFT dataset with Metadata in preview, along with the Historic Prices API in preview, and the v0.3 update to the Node.js SDK [spice.js](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@spiceai/spice).

**Historic Prices API (Preview):** In addition to accessing the Spot Prices of popular token/currency pairs on top exchanges, users can now access the **`/v0.1/prices/[pair]`** API, which returns historical prices of the specified token/currency pair. You can refine your search by defining parameters like `start` and `end`, which will return all prices between the two timestamps at a provided `granularity`.

Please contact us if you would like to access the API.\
\
**NFT Dataset with Metadata (Preview):** You can now query and leverage fungible and non-fungible token contracts under `eth.tokens` as well as isolated NFT specific per token information under `eth.nfts`. These are made available also with name and symbol for ERC721 tokens. See the full list of NFT tables and Token tables.

**Node.js SDK v0.3:** adds support for improved Prices APIs supporting spot/latest and historical prices for pair across Coinbase, Gemini, and tracked by Coinmarket Cap. This upgrade ensures the SDK remains the easiest way to use and query [Spice.xyz](https://spice.xyz/) with Node.js.

It uses [Apache Apache Flight](https://arrow.apache.org/docs/format/Flight.html) to efficiently stream data to the client and [Apache Arrow](https://arrow.apache.org/) Records as data frames which are then easily converted to JavaScript objects/arrays or JSON.

New functions available on the client are:

- `getPrice()`
- `getPrices()`

You'll need [Node.js 16+](https://nodejs.org/) to get started. See the step-by-step installation guide [here](https://spice.ai/docs/sdks/node.js-sdk).

## January 2023

January 31, 2023

Sharing a packed release this month focused on a new dataset, org management, two developer querying tools, and two SDKs.

**Ethereum Name Service (ENS) Events:** now out of preview, it's available by querying `ens.domains`, which is updated in real-time to have the latest `eth_address`whenever a transfer or name-registered event happens. Both `eth.ens` and other on-demand events indexed under the `eth.ens` prefix such as `eth.ens_event_nameregistered` are updated in real time with the same high-performance standards of published Spice datasets. See the tables here.

**Org Management:** existing users can start exploring org support and management for users, apps, and datasets by [authorizing Spice with read-only access](https://spice.ai/docs/cloud/getting-started/get-started/portal-login) when logging into the [Spice.xyz](http://spice.xyz/) portal. This will also act as a parent container for future concepts including apps, users, teams, datasets, and metrics for streamlined management and navigation within [spice.xyz](http://spice.xyz/).

The big game changers this month are Async Query and [Flow AI Query Auto-Complete (in preview)](https://medium.com/spice-ai/introducing-spice-ai-flow-8bcfc5cc2294). They supercharge the developer experience.

**Async Query API:** you can post a JSON payload specifying list of query completion, and `notifications` results can be fetched asynchronously once the query has completed. Choose function client apps such as AWS Lambda to async query Spice.xyz and receive result notifications by webhook. Results are accessible up to 20 minutes after they are posted.

**Flow (AI SQL Query Auto-Complete):** you can now query with plain text, hit enter, and watch as Flow autocompletes the request with the corresponding SQL lines in your [spice.xyz](http://spice.xyz/) query editor. Hit tab to accept the AI-generated completion, then accept, reject, or edit before run the query.

We've also released the new [gospice Golang SDK](https://spice.ai/docs/sdks/go) and added improvements to our [Python SDK](https://spice.ai/docs/sdks/python-sdk) including timeout support.

**Go SDK:** gospice is the easiest way to query [Spice.xyz](https://spice.xyz/) from Go. It uses [Apache Apache Flight](https://arrow.apache.org/docs/format/Flight.html) to efficiently stream data to the client and [Apache Arrow](https://arrow.apache.org/) Records as data frames.\
GoDocs available at [pkg.go.dev/github.com/spiceai/gospice](https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/spiceai/gospice).

We continue to make performance improvements for faster, more reliable queries and also recently launched our much anticipated Polygon Support, which you can read more about [here](https://blog.spice.ai/build-multi-chain-with-spice-ai-now-with-polygon-support-9db156f36d80).

## May 2022

May 31, 2022

Spice now has some of the best automated token standard detection for erc20, erc721, and erc1155 tokens available. Tokens are detected by their signatures and as they emit events over time, so Spice provides a probability of standards compliance to each contract. Along with this support are now token-specific tables like `eth.tokens_erc1155` and `eth.token_transfers_erc20`. See the entire list Tokens Tables.

Performance is now even better, especially for larger queries, and for results over the HTTP API. We still recommend the [Apache Arrow Flight API](https://spice.ai/docs/cloud/api/sql-query/apache-arrow-flight-api) that's easily accessible via the [Python SDK](https://spice.ai/docs/sdks/python-sdk) for production use though.

WebSocket support is now available in private preview to Design Partners - get in touch if you are interested in custom limits, early access features, and dedicated support.
